What To Expect

From first contact with Indianapolis TMS, you will be welcomed into the Indianapolis TMS family. Your initial evaluation will be scheduled with Evie. During that evaluation, Evie will gather information including your symptoms and treatment history. Other treatment options will also be discussed at that time. She will also answer any questions that you may have about TMS and whether it is the right decision for you. We suggest that you bring your significant other or family member with you to the evaluation to assist in this process. If you feel positive about moving forward with the process of TMS, we will proceed with contacting your insurance company to obtain the authorization for the treatment. If you do not have insurance, no worries. We will work with you to set up a plan for you.

Treatment sessions can be scheduled once your insurance company has authorized the process. The first appointment could last up to two hours. At the first treatment appointment, we will determine the optimal placement and strength of the magnetic field. Each subsequent treatment will be scheduled for 30 minutes, with the actual treatment lasting 25 minutes during which you will be awake and alert. The magnetic pulses make a loud clicking sound and feel like a tapping on the scalp but do not result in more than mild discomfort. If you wish, you can choose a show on Netflix or listen to music during the TMS session. Ear plugs will be provided.

After the treatment you can drive and resume your normal activity. TMS is non-invasive, meaning it does not involve surgery, and has no systemic effects. Typical TMS side effects are transient and mild irritation or discomfort at the treatment site and headache.

A usual course of treatment for depression involves sessions 5 days a week for 4 to 6 weeks, although this can vary depending on your response. Upon completion of the 5 day a week treatment, you will be placed on a tapering schedule for the next 3 weeks. As you progress through your treatment, we will regularly assess with you your status and determine with you the eventual number of treatments.
